The Balsillie School of International Affairs will host a Global Political Economy dissertation workshop from April 24 to 26 2019. The workshop will give Ph.D. students the opportunity to present work in progress to an interdisciplinary audience of faculty and students.
Framework: Ph.D. students will present either a dissertation proposal or a draft thesis chapter. All participants (students and faculty) will read all of the submitted papers in advance. Half an hour will be devoted to each paper on each day of the workshop. On April 25, each paper will be introduced by a student discussant, and there will then be open discussion of the paper; the author will not be permitted to speak. On April 26, the author will lead off the discussion with a response to the previous day’s comments and critiques, and then the floor will be opened. Faculty will participate in the discussion on both days, but students will be encouraged to take the lead. The workshop will give students the opportunity to get feedback on their own work, to gain experience of discussing the work of others, and to make connections with students and faculty at other universities. There will also be a welcome event on the evening of April 24.
Eligibility: Students will need to be able to submit either an extended dissertation proposal or a draft thesis chapter by April 8 2019. Applications from students in the second year of their PhD studies or higher will be prioritized. In assessing the applications, we will take a broad view of the scope of topics covered by GPE/IPE, but we particularly encourage applications from students who are explicitly engaging with GPE/IPE debates.

Include with your submission your contact details, the name of your academic program, and your current year level. If you may be able to cover some or all of your travel and accommodation costs, please indicate this in your application. Decisions will be made by early December 2018.
Funding: We hope to be able to provide funding for participants’ travel, accommodation and meals. Travel funding for students from outside of North America will be limited.
